A 21-year-old man was sentenced to four years and three months in prison after pleading guilty to repeatedly sexually abusing a girl and blackmailing her with a video of the act. The Central Criminal Court heard that the defendant, who was about 13 when the abuse began, threatened to circulate the recording unless the victim met him again. The video was eventually shared, causing the victim severe distress.

The court accepted the man’s guilty pleas on three counts of defilement of a child under 15, covering incidents between 2018 and 2020. He also pleaded guilty to one count of defilement of a child under 17 in 2021. These charges carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment for the first three counts and seven years for the final count.

In a victim-impact statement, the young woman stated she did not consent to any of the acts. She described the experience as feeling like the end of her life and said the effects would never fully disappear. She told investigators that during the first incident in 2018, she pushed back and cried while the man, who was physically stronger, forced intercourse. During a third incident, the victim was intoxicated, and the man used his phone to record the act and her face.

Judge Kerida Naidoo described the crimes as a protracted campaign of blackmail and coercion. The judge noted that the defendant had an ADHD diagnosis, which may have impacted his cognitive processing, but clarified this was not a mental illness. Naidoo set a headline sentence of six years and nine months before adjusting for the guilty plea and expressions of remorse, including a letter of apology.

The judge reduced the final sentence to four years and nine months, with the last six months suspended for one year on strict conditions. Naidoo acknowledged the man’s age at the time of the offenses but noted that a probation report found him claimed poor recollection and gave contradictory accounts. The judge said this limited insight undermined the claim of remorse to some degree.

Investigating gardaí told the court that the victim agreed to meet the man again after he threatened her family members. She was 15 at that time and described the encounter as aggressive and painful. The man was arrested and interviewed in 2023, where he initially told officers the acts had been consensual and that they had been going out together.

Defence counsel argued that the man was very sorry for the offenses and that the matter had weighed heavily on him. She noted he suffered from low mood and was on medication. The lawyer asked the court to consider the defendant’s age during the incidents and the lack of a significant age gap between the two parties.
