The Bluetooth Special Interest Group officially approved Bluetooth High Data Throughput as an optional feature within the Bluetooth Core 7.0 specification on Wednesday. This update increases the maximum supported bit rate for Bluetooth Low Energy from 2 Mbps to 7.5 Mbps. The change represents a nearly fourfold increase in data transfer speed.

The organization stated that the higher bit rate will enable high-resolution audio streaming while also improving battery life and reliability. Wireless audio remains the primary target for this capability. The new standard allows for spatial audio and multi-channel surround sound without requiring proprietary wireless formats. This move aims to standardize high-fidelity listening experiences across different hardware manufacturers.

Manufacturers are expected to release the first devices supporting Bluetooth High Data Throughput in 2027. The Bluetooth SIG noted that the faster data transfer rates will benefit various consumer electronics beyond headphones. Smartwatches can sync larger volumes of training, health, and fitness data to paired phones in less time. Because the radio stays active for shorter periods during these transfers, the devices consume less power.

Spatial computing and extended reality headsets stand to gain from the upgrade as well. These devices can deliver more capable experiences without relying on a Wi-Fi connection for data transmission. The group also identified personal AI gadgets as a key beneficiary. These devices can hand off data to smartphones for processing more efficiently. This efficiency allows for lighter and smaller device designs by offloading heavy computational tasks.

Routine maintenance tasks on connected devices will also become faster. Firmware updates for smartwatches and smart home accessories will complete in shorter windows of time. Neville Meijers, CEO of the Bluetooth SIG, described the update as a new level of performance. He stated that the technology expands the role of Bluetooth across consumer, commercial, and industrial markets. Meijers added that the standard creates a foundation for the next generation of wireless innovation.

The Bluetooth SIG has previewed this upgrade over the past year before making it a formal part of the Core 7.0 specification. The group emphasized that Bluetooth remains the most widely used wireless standard globally. The organization said the technology continues to evolve to meet the demands of a connected world. The new High Data Throughput feature is now available for integration into future product designs.
