A New York Times poll released Monday places Democrat Adam Hamilton ahead of Republican incumbent Roger Marshall by five points in the Kansas Senate race. The result marks a sharp departure from historical trends, as the state has not sent a Democrat to the upper chamber in nearly a century.
The shift in Kansas occurs while approximately 50 million Americans have already cast ballots ahead of Tuesday's election. Both Iowa and Kansas have transformed from reliable Republican wins into competitive contests. Democrats need to secure a net gain of four Senate seats to regain control of the chamber, making these two states high-priority targets for both parties.
In Iowa, the race remains close. President Donald Trump campaigned in the state over the weekend and addressed questions regarding Republican candidate Ashley Hinson's physical appearance during a speech. He stated that he knew Hinson for a long time and noted she was "a little bit heavier" in the past, adding that she followed a regimen to get into shape for the role.
Trump claimed Hinson asked him not to bring the topic up, though he proceeded with the remarks. The comments offer a glimpse into the campaign dynamics in a state where candidates are described as neck and neck.
In Kansas, the focus has turned to incumbent Marshall's medical background. He released a closing argument video on Sunday defending his practices as a doctor, a subject that drew criticism during his campaign. Marshall's staff reportedly did not want the video released and expressed concern that it might have caused more damage than benefit to his standing with voters.
The polling numbers and recent campaign activity set the stage for Tuesday's vote. The outcomes in these two midwestern states will determine the final balance of power in the U.S. Senate.
