Diesel costs double in a year, forcing Lorain County truckers to raise rates
Owners in Northeast Ohio report weekly fuel bills exceeding $2,000, citing a jump from $3.70 to $6.50 per gallon over the past twelve months.

The average price of diesel in the region has reached $6.50 per gallon, according to AAA data. This figure represents a sharp increase from the $3.70 average recorded one year ago. The spike has forced independent operators in Lorain County to absorb higher weekly fuel costs or pass them along to clients.
Keith, an owner-operator based in Avon, stated his weekly fuel expenditure has climbed above $2,000. He noted that filling his semi used to cost approximately $400. That same fill-up now requires more than $700. Keith explained that retailers must compensate carriers for the difference in fuel costs, which translates directly into higher prices for shoppers.
“All these places, the stores and everything, they got to pay more to us to haul it because they got to make up our fuel difference,” Keith said. “So now the consumer has to pay the difference.”
The price volatility has frustrated drivers who watch the market fluctuate. Andrew, a fellow trucker, described the recent trend as a cycle of rising and falling prices that has recently reversed. He filled his tank with 142 gallons at a Pilot Travel Center in Avon. Even with a discount, the transaction totaled $804.
“142 gallons, with our discount, was $804,” Andrew said. He observed that the price trend had been improving before reversing. “It was up, it started to come down, now it’s going back up again.”
Industry analysts attribute the record-high prices to two main factors: rising global oil costs and supply shortages linked to ongoing wars in Ukraine and Iran. Keith summarized the current market conditions with a single word. “All I can say, it’s ridiculous,” he said.
