Max Engling, the Republican candidate for Indiana Secretary of State, said on Sunday that an outside audit and stricter enforcement against fraudulent business registrations are his top priorities. Engling is running against Democrat Beau Bayh in a race that will be decided on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Engling stated that he wants the Indiana Inspector General to review the office to find issues that might otherwise go unnoticed. He described the Inspector General as an entity with the authority to audit the office and said he is committed to bringing that entity in.
The candidate also pointed to fraudulent business registrations in the trucking industry as a public safety concern. Engling said some companies register through the Secretary of State’s office and then hire drivers who lack proper commercial driver’s licenses, legal authorization, or English proficiency. He said holding those businesses accountable is one way the office can help improve road safety.
Engling said he would work with the Indiana General Assembly to put new processes in place and make the office run more professionally. He linked these changes to his goal of making Indiana a state where young people want to put down roots and build businesses.
Engling said he wants his children to choose Indiana to put their roots down and build a business in the state, just as he did. He said he wants to ensure the state remains a good place for the next generation to live and work.
Engling also criticized his opponent, Beau Bayh, over statements about Engling’s personal records. Engling said Bayh is willing to lie about things that are public record, such as finances and driving records. Engling said that if Bayh is willing to lie about public records, he is certainly going to be willing to lie about other things.
The race follows the Republican convention in June, when Engling defeated incumbent Secretary of State Diego Morales for the party’s nomination. Morales is not on the November ballot. The office oversees state elections and also handles business registrations and other responsibilities.
