Jackson residents who frequent The Hideaway nightclub must now prepare for a potential shutdown. Mayor John Horhn directed the city to seek legal remedies that could end the venue's operations. This action follows a violent incident over the weekend that resulted in two deaths and six injuries.
City Attorney Drew Martin has been assigned the task of exploring all available legal options. The goal is to declare The Hideaway a public nuisance and force its closure. The directive was issued in a Sunday night press release. It comes after 20-year-old Lovdia Poindexter and 18-year-old Jada Henderson were killed. Four women, aged 18, 18, 19, and 20, and two men, aged 19 and 20, also sustained injuries.
Law enforcement preliminary findings indicate two unidentified men wearing ski masks entered the club shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday. At least one suspect pulled a firearm and opened fire on a crowd on the dance floor. No arrests have been made. Authorities have not publicly identified the suspects. The Hideaway's operations are currently suspended while the investigation continues.
Jackson State University President Dr. Denise Jones Gregory confirmed that students were among the victims. The university canceled all undergraduate classes for Monday and Tuesday in response to the tragedy. Horhn stated that his heart is with the grieving families and those recovering from injuries. He said no one should have to fear for their life while enjoying an evening out.
Horhn also addressed future funding for city safety. He expressed gratitude for millions of dollars in federal grants that Jackson will soon receive. These funds are part of the Model Cities Initiative. The money will support investments in personnel, investigative technology, and violence prevention programs. The mayor's team aims to use these resources to prevent violence and hold the establishment accountable.
Anyone with information about the shooting or the suspects is asked to contact the Jackson Police Department at (601) 960-1800. Crime Stoppers can be reached at (601) 355-8477. The city is waiting for further details before making a final decision on the club's status.
