Loudoun County Public Schools will not fill open positions for the remainder of the current school year. Superintendent Aaron Spence announced the strategic hiring pause at the school board meeting on Tuesday, October 27. The move responds directly to a decline in student numbers. The district expects enrollment to fall by approximately 1,500 students in the coming year.

The district faced a similar adjustment earlier this year. Spence noted that enrollment dropped by roughly 2,000 students in the current academic year. With few vacancies currently available, the administration aims to reduce staffing through natural attrition. This approach avoids the need to end existing employee contracts. The hiring freeze will not apply to the 2027-28 academic year.

Board members are currently beginning budget discussions to address the financial impact. One option under review involves consolidating schools in western Loudoun. However, board members have largely opposed closures, and no final plan has been approved. The district continues to evaluate how to align staffing levels with projected attendance.

Separate from the closure discussions, the board is reviewing attendance zones for 12 elementary schools in eastern Loudoun. This review could alter which school some students attend. Officials clarified that this is a distinct process from school closures. So far, little support has emerged for major boundary changes. The board will continue working through next year’s budget without an approved plan to close schools.
