Dr. Shawn Clark, a Mobile neurosurgeon facing 14 counts of child pornography charges, was found dead inside a vehicle on Monday afternoon. His death occurred just days before he was scheduled to appear in court.
Police responded to 6901 Airport Boulevard where officers discovered Clark inside a car. Mobile authorities stated the incident does not appear to be a criminal case at this time. An autopsy will be performed to determine the specific cause of death.
Clark had a complex legal history in the weeks leading up to his death. He was initially arrested on a grand jury indictment on Friday, October 30. He was released the same day on a signature bond.
He was previously held at the Baldwin County Jail from mid-September until his release on October 10. During that first detention, Clark survived an in-custody suicide attempt in mid-September. His medical license had already been suspended at that time.
The charges against him were split between two jurisdictions. Mobile County prosecutors filed five counts of production and five counts of possession of child pornography. Baldwin County prosecutors filed four counts of possession of child pornography.
Court appearances were set for later this month. Clark was not present for those proceedings due to his death on Monday.
