Louisville has increased its financial commitment to the football program, and athletic director Josh Heird says that spending has raised the stakes.

In a one-on-one interview on Tuesday, Heird stated that the pressure to win has intensified because the investment level has grown. He noted that this dynamic is specific to the current moment at the university.

The university approved an eight-year contract extension for head coach Jeff Brohm in April. The deal is worth $64 million and includes additional incentives. This agreement came after reports of outside interest in Brohm. It represents a large increase over his previous deal and places his salary in the top 25 nationally.

The financial commitment extends beyond the head coach's pay. Louisville has spent heavily to build and keep its roster in an era of revenue sharing and high player compensation. Estimates from The Athletic place the 2026 roster budget between $22 million and $25 million.

These figures are estimates rather than audited expenditures. The budget is comparable to Kentucky and NC State, which range from $22 million to $26 million. However, it is far lower than the budgets at Ohio State, Oregon, and Texas. Those programs estimate their spending at $45 million to $55 million. Indiana, which is currently ranked fourth in the College Football Playoff, has a roster budget estimated between $36 million and $40 million.

Louisville enters its game at Georgia Tech on Saturday with a 5-3 record. The Cardinals are 4-2 in the ACC and tie for third in the conference standings. They have won three straight games after a two-game losing streak, though defensive issues remain, particularly regarding long touchdown plays allowed by the defense.

Heird said his role is to support Brohm without letting frustration over single results drive decisions. He described his approach as helping coaches think holistically and remove emotion from the process. He added that the immediate goal is to win the next game.

Heird did not claim the recent winning streak has solved all problems. He said the staff is managing the current situation and making the best of their resources. He credited Brohm for staying focused during the difficult stretch. He expressed confidence that if the team continues its recent progress, it will be in a strong position by the end of the season. He stated that the priority now is to stack wins before evaluating the program in the offseason.
