New College of Florida has claimed the number one position for liberal arts colleges in the state according to Niche's 2027 rankings. The institution also achieved its highest placement yet in the Forbes 2027 rankings, where it placed 82nd among public colleges in the United States.

The university earned an A grade for academics in the Niche report. This category carries the most weight in the overall calculation, representing 35 percent of the total score. The college also received A grades for diversity and professors. Its overall standing is a B+, a grade it has maintained for six consecutive years.

Richard Corcoran, president of New College of Florida, stated that the school focuses on excellence rather than rankings. He noted that students are required to defend their ideas, conduct original research, and master critical thinking. Corcoran described the new rankings as a byproduct of an institution that demands high standards from its students and faculty.

The 2027 Niche methodology includes a new metric called the Institutional Success Score. This factor accounts for 5 percent of the total ranking. It evaluates each college against peers with similar missions rather than comparing them to traditional institutions. The score credits schools that excel at their specific goals, such as New College's academic contracts and senior thesis requirements.

In addition to the state lead, New College of Florida placed third among small colleges in Florida. It ranked ninth among top public universities in the state and 12th among all colleges in Florida. Nationally, the institution placed 59th among liberal arts colleges in America. In the South, Forbes ranked the college 80th among all institutions.

New College of Florida is a public honors college founded in 1960. The campus is located on 151 acres on Sarasota Bay. The institution offers more than 50 undergraduate majors and graduate programs in applied data science and marine mammal science. It also recently launched a master's program in educational leadership.
