Local authorities in Derbyshire have restored full traffic flow to the New Mills area after a double decker bus collided with a commercial building. The incident, which occurred at the intersection of Union Road and Market Street, prompted a temporary closure of three major streets while emergency crews assessed the structural integrity of the site and managed a gas supply issue.
Derbyshire Police reported the crash at 17:20 GMT on Saturday. Several individuals sustained minor injuries and received treatment from paramedics at the scene. Following the impact, officers established a cordon around the intersection to address concerns regarding a potential gas leak. The bus remained at the site until crews were able to recover the vehicle on Sunday.
Gas distribution company Cadent responded to the scene to inspect the infrastructure. Elliott Nelson, the network director for the gas emergency service, explained that the damage affected a service pipe rather than the main road supply. "We were called out yesterday to support the emergency service response to an incident involving damage to a gas service pipe," Nelson stated. His team isolated the supply to the damaged line to ensure safety, a process that allowed for a quicker restoration of public access than a mainline repair would have required.
Nelson confirmed that technicians checked all surrounding gas assets and found no additional impact from the collision. This isolation procedure meant the wider network remained unaffected. On Sunday, police issued an update stating that Union Road, Market Street, and St Mary's Road had reopened to traffic. A structural engineer inspected the building struck by the bus and declared it safe, clearing the final hurdle for the full return of normal road operations in the district.
