The Cleveland Metropolitan School District has placed 16 temporary monitors in school parking lots to address a series of car break-ins. District leaders stated that the move is intended to make teachers and staff feel safer while working. The district is also evaluating long-term security upgrades, including gates and fencing, to prevent future incidents.

CMSD Chief Executive Officer Dr. Warren Morgan described the recent break-ins and vandalism at multiple sites as an urgent emergency. The district is currently working with local police to review existing security systems. Union leaders have joined the effort by urging the public to report any suspicious activity or break-ins they observe.

In a related local development, Dave Showalter, a resident of East Canton, credited speed cameras with improving his quality of life. Showalter has lived along East Nassau Street, a road that has had speeding issues for years. He noted that the cameras, installed by the village in May, are the most effective solution he has seen.

The village has issued more than 16,000 citations since July 2026. Some drivers have responded to the new enforcement with a boycott of local shops, a move business owners say is hurting their revenue. Showalter said he supports local businesses and hopes drivers will reconsider the boycott while the village continues to address safety concerns.

In Ohio high school athletics, the Ohio High School Athletic Association disqualified Glenville High School from this year's football playoffs. The decision is part of an ongoing investigation into student-athlete participation, specifically regarding students who attend Ginn Academy. Glenville's first-round opponent will advance in the tournament while the investigation continues. It is not yet clear if Glenville will face additional penalties.

In Oberlin, Daniel Jones, 31, appeared in court on Thursday after a double homicide left two people dead, including a college professor. Police said Jones admitted to killing his father and stepmother. Officers were called on Wednesday morning after his car was found smoking in a parking lot. Jones faces charges of murder, assault, and tampering with evidence. His bond was set at $3 million, and the case will proceed to a grand jury.
