Bend-La Pine Schools issued the first public remarks from Cassidy Schutz, a certified learning specialist at Silver Rail Elementary, on Friday. The statement addressed the events of October 15, when a 16-year-old former student entered the school and opened fire in a special needs classroom.

Schutz, who was present during the attack, described the day as a horrific and heartbreaking tragedy. She stated that there were no words to describe the depth of her sadness and emphasized that the event was a real-life disaster, not a story. She expressed her thoughts for those who were lost, their families, and those who were injured.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz detailed Schutz's actions during the incident. He said she threw her cellphone at the shooter and wrestled him for the shotgun he was carrying. Her efforts assisted Kaylub Giamanco, the father of a student, in taking down the armed teen. Officials have praised her actions for helping save lives.

The shooting resulted in four deaths: teacher Megan Lambert, 25, and three students. The students who died were Rhoam Summer, age 5, and two other children, ages 8 and 11. The 16-year-old shooter was also killed. Two others survived the attack: teacher Becky Drury and a 7-year-old girl.

In her statement, Schutz noted that the events unfolded very quickly and that she wished for more time. She said the pain of the loss would remain with her forever. Her current focus is on the families, the school team, and her own healing process.

Schutz asked the public to give her time, space, and privacy to heal. She indicated that she will not be making any additional public statements at this time. The school district released the statement on her behalf.

The incident remains the deadliest school shooting in Oregon in recent years. The district continues to support the families of the victims and the staff of Silver Rail Elementary. No further press conference has been scheduled by the school board or police department as of Friday.
