Flavio Bolsonaro arrived in Miami on Wednesday morning, stepping off a private plane into a city with the largest Brazilian population in the United States. His departure from Brazil followed a loss to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by a margin of 4.4 million votes in the second-round runoff held Sunday. Bolsonaro, 45, is a sitting senator whose term ends on Jan. 31, 2027, and he is currently under investigation by Brazil's Supreme Court for corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion.

The court ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his regular and diplomatic passports by noon on Tuesday. In a video posted Monday, he stated he was organizing opposition to the election results among congressional colleagues. The Supreme Court had not issued a warrant for his arrest, meaning federal police were not monitoring his movements when he left his home in Brasilia. A Brazilian diplomat told the Associated Press that Bolsonaro used an Italian passport to cross the land border into Argentina, a route that bypasses standard scrutiny for exiting Brazilians.

Bolsonaro’s exit was facilitated by a rapid diplomatic shift. U.S. President Donald Trump, a close ally who visited Bolsonaro at the White House in May, called the former candidate and his family "fine people" and declared them welcome in the U.S. on Tuesday. The State Department approved visas for the family this week. Trump also suggested the election was "rigged," a claim that contrasts with endorsements from the Organization of American States and world leaders who congratulated Lula on his victory.

The family’s route was indirect. They entered Argentina via a border checkpoint late Tuesday, according to Argentine immigration officials. Flightradar24 data indicates the private charter landed in Guayaquil, Ecuador, at 4 a.m. local time before taking off for Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport. Bolsonaro had visited his father, Jair Bolsonaro, in Florida before leaving. The former president is serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest for an attempted coup following his 2022 loss to Lula.

Lula, who turned 81 on Tuesday, criticized the departure from outside the presidential residence in Brasilia. "I regret that he left Brazil, because he could have stayed here and proven that the accusations are not true," Lula said. "This act of leaving Brazil is shameful." Argentine President Javier Milei, another Trump ally, described the move as rescuing Bolsonaro "from the claws of communism," a comment that may deepen tensions between the two governments.

Bolsonaro is accused of using a sports betting company to launder fraudulent deductions from government pensions and of accepting millions of dollars from a disgraced banker. He has denied wrongdoing. The U.S. has imposed double-digit sanctions on Brazil, the largest economy in Latin America, while Lula’s government continues to deepen trade ties with China and pursue influence through the BRICS group. Representatives of Brazil's government have not responded to requests for comment regarding the senator's departure.
