Ten people died when one high-speed train struck the rear of another in central Spain on Wednesday morning. The collision occurred in Toledo province, resulting in a suspension of rail service between Madrid, Ciudad Real, and Andalusia.
Spanish state television TVE reported that both trains were traveling in the same direction. The impact forced two carriages of the rear train off the tracks. Local officials confirmed that passengers were injured during the crash.
Manuel Galán, the mayor of Urda, stated that Civil Protection authorities requested the local sports pavilion be prepared to treat the passengers. Jesús Pérez, mayor of Los Yébenes, described the accident as serious in an interview with TVE.
Emiliano García-Page, the president of Castilla-La Mancha, announced on X that he was traveling to the scene. The national rail operator ADIF confirmed the incident and the subsequent halt in operations on the affected corridor.
This crash follows a major derailment in southern Spain in January. That incident killed 45 people when a train left the tracks and hit an oncoming service. It remains the deadliest rail disaster in the country since an 80-person collision in 2013.
The January accident reduced public confidence in the high-speed network. The current incident in Toledo has interrupted a key route linking the capital to the south.
