Chelsea lost their fifth consecutive penalty shootout against Liverpool on Tuesday, a statistic that defines the rivalry between the two clubs. Wesley Fofana’s final attempt flew high into the Kop stands, sealing a 6-5 victory for the home side at Anfield. The result advances Liverpool to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals while eliminating Chelsea from the competition.
The match ended 1-1 in regular time after a rapid exchange of penalties in the final minutes of the first half. Cody Gakpo opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 43rd minute, converting a spot kick awarded after Virgil van Dijk was fouled. Morgan Rogers responded for Chelsea just three minutes prior in the 40th minute, placing his shot past goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Both decisions by referee Darren England were made instantly without video assistant referee intervention.
The penalty shootout followed a pattern familiar to the Chelsea squad. They have now lost four previous shootouts against Liverpool, including the 2007 Champions League semi-final and the 2022 FA Cup final. In the current contest, Chelsea’s Emmanuel Emegha had a chance to end the match but was denied by a strong save from Mamardashvili. Liverpool’s Kostas Tsimikas also failed to convert, sending his effort over the bar before Ryan Gravenberch and Valentin Barco missed in succession.
Manager Xabi Alonso returned to Anfield with Chelsea and received a cool reception from the home crowd. Jordan Henderson, a former Liverpool midfielder now playing for Chelsea, drew boos whenever he touched the ball. Alonso made notable tactical changes, starting Danny Welbeck and Henderson as a pair up front following the absence of injured star João Pedro and suspended Cole Palmer. Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola also altered his lineup, placing Lewis Koumas on the right wing.
The first half featured fast-paced play with few clear chances until the penalty sequence. Rio Ngumoha created excitement for Liverpool with runs down the left, but support from teammates was lacking. Chelsea’s Malo Gusto was involved in the build-up to Rogers’ goal, passing to Moisés Caicedo who was fouled by Ryan Gravenberch. The second half saw Chelsea push for a winner, with substitutes Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola entering the game in the 59th minute.
Goalkeepers played decisive roles in the final stages. Mike Penders saved a close-range header from Ronald Araujo and later stopped a low shot from Barcola. Mamardashvili produced key saves against Marco Palestra and Wirtz to keep the game level. The match concluded with the shootout, where Liverpool’s composure proved decisive over Chelsea’s recurring struggles from the spot.
The Carabao Cup quarter-final draw was conducted immediately after the match at Anfield. Liverpool will face Bournemouth in the next round. Other results included Manchester City beating Brighton 4-3 on penalties, Fulham winning 2-1 against Brentford, and Bournemouth defeating Aston Villa 3-0. Everton and Newcastle are scheduled to play on Thursday to determine their opponent for Fleetwood Town.
