Kai Havertz scored in the 16th minute to give Arsenal a 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. The goal marked the difference in a tight Premier League fixture that ended with the visitors holding onto their lead until the final whistle.
Liverpool entered the match with a five-match winning streak in all competitions, a run that came to a halt against the league leaders. Arsenal, who won the title last season, used their control of the tempo to limit their hosts’ opportunities. The result extends Arsenal’s dominance in the current standings, regardless of upcoming financial rule decisions involving Manchester City.
The decisive moment resulted from a defensive error by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson. He attempted a short pass to Jérémy Jacquet but misjudged the weight and direction of the ball. Martin Ødegaard intercepted the play and initiated a quick exchange. Declan Rice delivered a low cross from the right flank, finding Havertz in the six-yard box for a close-range finish.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola made an early substitution in the second half, replacing Trey Nyoni with Dominik Szoboszlai in the 59th minute. Nyoni had made his full league debut in the match, engaging aggressively in challenges against Ødegaard and Havertz in the first half. The 19-year-old received a standing ovation from the home crowd when he was taken off the pitch.
Referee Andy Madley managed a heated atmosphere, issuing a booking to Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk at full time for sarcastically applauding the official. Liverpool players and fans challenged several decisions, most notably a lack of penalty calls in the first half. Jurriën Timber held Alexander Isak’s shirt during a 21st-minute challenge, but the referee allowed play to continue.
Liverpool created chances in the second half, but Arsenal’s defensive structure held firm. Alexis Mac Allister missed a header from a cross by Milos Kerkez in the 43rd minute. Earlier in that sequence, Florian Wirtz struck a free kick against the crossbar. In the 68th minute, a slip by Jacquet led to a chance for Christos Tzolis, who forced a save from Alisson after a first-time shot.
Tensions rose near the end of the match when Mac Allister and Noni Madueke collided in a melee. Mac Allister fell to the ground, while Madueke, already on a yellow card, avoided a second booking. The incident added to the frustration of a Liverpool side that struggled to break down an Arsenal defense that maintained composure throughout the contest.
