Philadelphia Phillies general manager Dave Dombrowski indicated his front office will prioritize defensive capability over offensive output when filling the backup catcher role. This strategic shift follows the recent designation for assignment of veteran catcher Garrett Stubbs, who is expected to enter free agency after clearing waivers.

The move leaves the team without a primary alternative to J.T. Realmuto, who started the majority of games in 2026. Realmuto played through 1,000 innings for the eighth time in his career. He posted a defensive runs saved rating of minus five, zero framing runs, and an OPS+ of 65. The Phillies re-signed Realmuto last offseason to a three-year, $45 million contract, a deal that will keep him as the starter for the next two seasons.

Dombrowski stated, “we do emphasize defense more in our catching position than we do offense.” This comment suggests the club may look past power hitters in favor of reliable handlers of the ball. The current internal option, Rafael Marchán, is arbitration eligible. Marchán finished 2026 with five defensive runs saved and a fielding run value of six. However, he hit .158 in 196 at-bats since the start of the 2025 season.

Several free agents align with the Phillies' stated defensive preference, though none are young or inexpensive. Ryan Jeffers, 29, led the market in 2026 with a .814 OPS and 14 home runs for the Minnesota Twins. He caught 674 one-third innings, a lighter load than Realmuto. The Athletics previously considered Jeffers as a trade target when Realmuto was a free agent last January.

Carson Kelly, 32, offers a higher offensive profile. He posted a .713 OPS for the Chicago Cubs in 2026, which is 99 points higher than Realmuto's mark. Kelly caught 848 one-third innings during the season. The Phillies would likely view him as a power option rather than a pure defensive specialist.

Austin Hedges, 34, represents a career defensive profile. He recorded 93 career defensive runs saved before the 2026 season. Last year with the Cleveland Guardians, he hit .702 OPS with seven home runs but posted a defensive runs saved rating of minus four. Hedges has been a 12-year veteran of the major leagues, known primarily for his handling of the position.

Christian Vázquez, 36, brings postseason experience. He won a World Series with Dombrowski and the Boston Red Sox in 2018. In 2026, Vázquez hit .207 with a .583 OPS for the Houston Astros. He recorded six defensive runs saved and a fielding run value of three. His age may be a limiting factor for a multi-year commitment.

Kyle Higashioka, 36, hit .676 OPS with seven home runs in 165 at-bats for the Texas Rangers. His defensive metrics declined in 2026, showing minus two defensive runs saved and a fielding run value of minus four. Signing him would result in the Phillies employing another 36-year-old catcher.

Tyler Stephenson, 30, is available after seven seasons with the Cincinnati Reds. He posted a .757 OPS over his career but has received poor defensive grades. The team may pass on him if they seek a larger role for their starter.

James McCann, 37, has played in the majors for 13 seasons. He posted a 110 OPS+ as a backup for the Arizona Diamondbacks over the past two years. The Phillies have not ruled out a veteran tandem, though McCann's age would make him one of the oldest players on the roster.
