Jamie Carragher believes Ryan Gravenberch faces a steep climb back into the Liverpool starting lineup after Andoni Iraola chose Trey Nyoni for Sunday's Premier League match against Arsenal at Anfield. The veteran pundit argues that once a manager picks a teenager over an established star, the senior player rarely regains the same footing.

Nyoni, 19, receives his first league start. He has made 20 appearances for Liverpool, 14 of which have occurred this season. The midfielder already secured a starting role in the Champions League. Iraola placed the Dutchman Gravenberch on the bench for the clash. Dominik Szoboszlai also sits on the bench, though he returns from injury, whereas Iraola simply opted for the younger option over Gravenberch.

Carragher drew on his own debut under manager Roy Evans against Michael Thomas to describe the psychological hurdle. “The first time as a youngster if you’re ever picked ahead of an established player…I always remember it was Michael Thomas, central midfield, the manager Roy Evans putting me in…It’s always difficult for the senior player to ever recover from that,” Carragher told Sky Sports. He predicted a “mighty blow” for Gravenberch, noting the shift in trust toward a player whose career trajectory moves in one direction.

Ian Wright, an Arsenal legend, suggested the selection reflects high praise from the dugout. Wright stated that Nyoni must be performing exceptionally well in training to earn such confidence in a major fixture. “Can you imagine how good he must be in training for him to go, ‘I’m going to put him in,’” Wright said. He highlighted the rarity of a manager choosing a rookie for a game of this magnitude.

Iraola defended the decision by pointing to Nyoni's on-pitch metrics. “He has been very good on the ball for us, very good without the ball. He understands the game,” Iraola told Sky Sports. The manager noted that the teenager covers substantial space, remains aggressive without possession, and communicates effectively with teammates. Iraola stated the coaching staff trusts the player 100 per cent.

Team mate Milos Kerkez described Nyoni as a hard worker who demonstrates quality on the ball while contributing in both defensive and attacking phases. Liverpool full-back Kerkez said everyone would assist the rookie to ensure he feels comfortable during the match. Gravenberch and Nyoni started together against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. Liverpool advanced on penalties following a 1-1 draw in that encounter.

Alexis Mac Allister returns to the starting lineup alongside Nyoni behind Florian Wirtz. Iraola's choice sets a specific tone for the midfield structure in the upcoming fixture.
