Two Cincinnati police officers are recovering at home after being assaulted while breaking up a large crowd near the University of Cincinnati on Saturday night. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. on Short Vine Street in the Corryville neighborhood during the city’s Halloweekend events.
Police were dispatched to the area after reports of a large group of people yelling near the university. They were attacked while responding to the crowd near a BP gas station. Ken Kober, president of the Fraternal Order of Police, confirmed the details on Monday. He stated that one officer received treatment at the scene, while the other was transported to a hospital for stitches, bruises, and bumps.
“Two were assaulted. Both officers will be OK,” Kober said. He noted that the department’s civil disturbance response team and additional police units were called to the location to assist.
Kober confirmed that police have made an arrest in connection with the incident. Videos and photographs posted online show at least one officer being assaulted as officers dispersed the crowd. Some footage also captures individuals standing on top of fuel pumps at the gas station.
Emergency communication reports indicate that police responded to a separate call of shots fired in the 800 block of East University Avenue about 10 minutes before the Short Vine Street incident. The Cincinnati Police Department and city leaders were contacted for further comment.
City Councilman Mark Jeffreys issued a statement condemning the violence. “I unequivocally condemn the attack on two Cincinnati police officers on Short Vine Street Saturday night,” Jeffreys said. He described the event as an appalling act of violence against officers who risk their lives to keep communities safe.
Jeffreys added that his thoughts were with the officers and their families. He said the community must stand united to show that violence against those who serve and protect the city will never be tolerated.
