Cyberpunk Edgerunners II arrived on Netflix alongside a substantial update to the Cyberpunk 2077 video game, returning to Night City four years after the first season became one of the platform's most-watched anime series in 2022.

The new run opens with a heist gone wrong that sends King, an edgerunner, into cyberpsychosis. King survives the episode but loses all of his cybernetic augments. Roman, a 12-year-old boy who records the city's chaos on camera, runs into D., a young man waging a war against the Arasaka corporation, and Thalia, a young woman who modifies her own body with cybernetic augments.

Thalia's mother, Avida, is King's ex and recruits him to persuade Thalia to stop augmenting herself. Kiril, Thalia's father, works as an executive at the Kang Tao corporation.

The season gives D. the strongest arc. Arasaka destroyed his life, taking almost everyone he loved before he could act, and he is haunted by visions of the dead. His quest for revenge reads as a trauma response, and the season's heaviest moments arrive when he confronts that grief. Johnny Silverhand fought Arasaka on ideology in Cyberpunk 2077, and David Martinez fought for love in the first Edgerunners.

Thalia becomes the second most compelling figure, though the show delays revealing her motives. The series puts its characters through the weight of the dead and dying, and it works hardest when D.'s grief and King's dedication to Thalia drive the scene.

The structure costs the story elsewhere. Thalia's parents stay one-note, which limits the force of the finale as they shape how the last three episodes play out. Kiril takes on a larger role late in the season, yet the show never explains his choices beyond his role as a corpo. The action, meanwhile, runs through Roman's camera lens rather than the sandevistan effects of season one, and the finale carries clear parallels to Akira.

The first Edgerunners centered on a love story and drove its viewers to tears over its final moments. Edgerunners II ends on a quieter register, with D.'s grief and King's devotion carrying the season's most forceful material.

Cyberpunk 2077 shipped its update on the same day the anime released. The first season drew viewers back to the game after its rocky launch, and it remains widely cited as one of the best video game adaptations.
