Early Anthropic Investors Face Massive Gains Ahead of Potential IPO
Valuations have surged to the point where early backers hold stakes worth billions, setting the stage for a historic windfall.

The most striking fact emerging from the latest private market data is that early backers of Anthropic already hold positions worth billions of dollars, even before the company goes public. This windfall is expected to materialize fully if the firm lists this year at a valuation approaching two trillion dollars. Even at the current private valuation of $965 billion, the stakes held by various venture capitalists and early investors total substantial sums. The upcoming public listing represents a potential doubling of gains for those who made late-stage bets, while earlier participants stand to see their initial outlays multiply significantly.
The path to these astronomical valuations has been rapid and steep. In 2021, the company was valued at just $461 million. By the following year, that figure had climbed to $183 billion. The momentum continued throughout 2024 and into 2025, with valuations reaching $380 billion before the current mark of $965 billion. Each step up the ladder attracted new capital and new investors, creating a layered structure of financial exposure that now commands the attention of the broader investment community.
Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, illustrates the magnitude of these gains. He invested in the Series A round in 2021 when the startup was valued at $461 million. According to PitchBook data, he now owns approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly $10 billion. This trajectory highlights how early entry points can translate into extraordinary wealth, even if the percentage ownership remains modest.
Later-stage investors have also seen their fortunes swell, though their entry prices were significantly higher. Iconiq wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the company was valued at $183 billion. That massive investment is now worth $17 billion. The firm stands to double that value if the initial public offering proceeds at the projected high end. This demonstrates that even late entrants can secure massive returns in the current AI boom.
Menlo Ventures has been a persistent supporter of the AI lab. The firm led the Series D round and has invested more than $1 billion in the company over time. Its current stake is valued at $14 billion. This sustained commitment reflects confidence in the company's long-term trajectory, and the financial rewards have been commensurate with that faith.
Sequoia entered the picture earlier this year, backing the firm when it was already valued at $380 billion. The $3 billion investment secured about 1% ownership. Despite the high entry point, Sequoia has already more than doubled its investment. This rapid appreciation underscores the aggressive pace at which Anthropic’s valuation has grown in recent months.
Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also seen significant growth in its position. The firm invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and has since added another $400 million to the company. This cumulative investment results in a stake worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm, but the original investment remains a key asset for the firm.
Spark Capital holds the distinction of being the only known venture firm with a board seat at Anthropic. It invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold to $7 billion. Such a return on investment is rare in venture capital and highlights the exceptional performance of Anthropic as an asset.
As the company moves toward a public listing, the focus will shift from private valuations to public market sentiment. The potential for a $2 trillion valuation suggests that the windfall for these backers will be substantial. For the investment community, these figures serve as a benchmark for the current state of the AI market. The success of Anthropic’s backers is a clear indicator of the confidence investors have in the sector’s future.
