East Lansing Fire Department crews responded to 91 incidents in a single 24-hour period during the Halloween weekend, a surge driven by two shootings and two crashes involving pedestrians. The volume of calls forced a full mobilization of first responders, with 75 of those incidents occurring overnight.

The violence began just after midnight on Sunday when three people were shot near the intersection of M.A. Avenue and Linden Street. The location sits within a student housing district that includes sorority houses. Later that night, a second incident occurred near Stoddard Avenue and Frye Street, an off-campus area along Grand River Avenue where two additional people suffered gunshot wounds.

Police recovered multiple firearms and took several individuals into custody during the investigation. Both pedestrians hit by vehicles remain in stable condition. In each crash, drivers were arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated. Authorities have not yet determined the specific causes for either shooting, including the events that led to the gunfire.

Police Chief Jennifer Brown stated that the department had a very busy night. She noted that the fire department’s high call volume mirrored the strain on police resources. The investigation continues as officers gather evidence from the two separate scenes.

The five shooting victims are expected to recover from their injuries. Two of them were treated at the first scene, while two others were injured in the second shooting. One victim remains under medical observation. No additional details on the arrests were released as of this morning.
