Police in East Lansing are investigating two separate shootings that occurred near the Michigan State University campus on Halloween night, leaving five people hospitalized.
East Lansing Police Chief Jennifer Brown addressed reporters on Sunday afternoon to confirm that officers responded to four distinct incidents in the area. Two of those events involved gunfire. The first shooting took place near the intersection of M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street, where multiple shots were fired. Three people sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to the hospital. Officials listed two of those victims in stable condition, while the status of the third was not immediately determined.
A second shooting occurred later that night near Stoddard and Frye Avenues. Two additional people were shot and are currently listed in stable condition. Brown stated that police recovered multiple firearms from the scene, though it remained unclear if those specific weapons were used in the attacks. She noted that several individuals were taken into custody in connection with the violence.
Authorities have not yet determined if the two shootings are linked. It is also unclear whether any of the victims are students at the university. A Michigan State University spokesperson stated that the university's police department assisted local officers but confirmed the criminal activity did not take place on campus or pose a direct threat to the school.
Brown added that the East Lansing Fire Department handled 91 total calls for service over a 24-hour period. Of those, 75 occurred during the Halloween night span.
