The 2026 midterm election in Michigan presents voters with five candidates to replace term-limited Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The winner will hold the state’s top executive office and control the levers of government policy.

The incoming governor will direct the state’s $4.8 billion budget and coordinate with the state Legislature. This role includes hiring leaders for state agencies and managing relationships with federal officials. Michigan Public interviewed each candidate to assess their positions on key issues. Only one candidate, Republican John James, declined to participate.

Candidates addressed the economic pressure Michiganders face as prices rise. While national and international factors drive much of this inflation, the governor retains authority to ease local financial burdens. The next leader must balance these state-level tools against broader economic trends.

Infrastructure debates, specifically regarding data centers, have become a central point of contention in the state. Residents, businesses, and officials have clashed over placement and development. The new governor will determine whether to alter Michigan’s current approach or maintain existing paths for these projects.

Polls indicate that threats to democracy rank among the top concerns for Michigan voters. As chief executive, the winner will decide which threats to prioritize and how to collaborate with other elected officials. The campaign offers a direct choice on how the state addresses these governance challenges.
