More than 250,000 licensed early care and education programs are now visible on property listings across the United States. Redfin, a real estate brokerage, launched this feature in partnership with Winnie, a national online childcare marketplace. The integration went live on Redfin’s mobile application for iOS and Android at the end of September. It is also available on the company’s desktop and mobile websites for all for-sale properties.

Daryl Fairweather, chief economist at Redfin, noted that housing and childcare represent the two largest expenses for many families. He explained that prospective buyers often use the platform to calculate how much house they can afford. Knowing local childcare options before committing to a mortgage helps in that financial planning process. The feature displays up to five nearby providers for each listed home. These listings include the ages served, distance from the property, and provider names.

The new tool sits next to the existing K-12 school data provided by GreatSchools, a nonprofit that has been integrated into Redfin for over a decade. Users can select a “Preschool & daycare” tab to view this information. Clicking on a provider name opens a pop-up with details such as hours of operation, address, and description. It also lists options for financial assistance and published parent reviews. Buyers can click through to the Winnie website for further details, including available slots and tuition rates.

Sara Mauskopf, CEO and co-founder of Winnie, said the company builds provider profiles using public state licensing databases. About one-quarter of the 250,000 provider pages on Winnie have been claimed by the operators. These active providers update their pages frequently because open spaces can change daily. Mauskopf emphasized that childcare is a necessity for young families rather than an optional expense. She argued that families should consider care costs upfront rather than treating them as an afterthought.

Mauskopf shared her own experience as a mother of three. She and her husband focused on home prices while searching for a residence. After moving, they had to scramble at the last minute to secure childcare. They even considered whether one parent needed to step away from work until a spot was found. She stated that this information is vital for families moving to both rural areas and large metros. Buyers need to know if options are within walking distance or require a drive.

The feature highlights what Mauskopf called “childcare deserts,” or areas with limited access to licensed programs. These locations might be affordable to live in, but a lack of nearby care can be a dealbreaker for some households. The tool helps buyers see if such options exist near a specific address. Isabelle Novak, a spokesperson for Redfin, confirmed that the integration only displays providers within a 10-mile radius. If no programs are found within that distance, a message informs the user that none were located.

Tuition transparency remains a challenge in the early care market. Mauskopf noted that many programs still require families to tour the facility before sharing prices. She described this practice as unique to the industry compared to other markets. However, she observed a recent shift as more providers begin posting tuition information publicly. This change is partly driven by families asking artificial intelligence tools for program rates. Mauskopf hopes this trend will continue so that cost data can be fully reflected in the Redfin integration.
