John Legend spent part of October 27 working behind the scenes to organize a political rally in downtown Columbus. The event took place at Cure Coffee and Cocktails, located at 154 N 3rd St.
The gathering served as a stop in the Ohio midterm election campaign for Senate candidate Sherrod Brown. Organizers from Brown's campaign and local Ohio groups provided speeches. The Ohio State University’s African American Voices Gospel Choir provided musical entertainment.
Legend, who was raised in Springfield, Ohio, greeted attendees and addressed the crowd. He discussed the value of grassroots organizing and local elections. He also mentioned the importance of investing in communities during the speech.
After the formal rally concluded, Legend joined the venue’s 45 Alive event. He performed music alongside DJ Prime, a vinyl spinner.
Ohio voters have until November 1 to cast early ballots for the midterms. The general election is scheduled for November 2. Polling stations will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The coffee shop hosts regular community events in addition to political gatherings. Legend's visit added a high-profile celebrity presence to the local midterm season activities.
