The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board added 426 students to its rolls for the 2026-27 school year, creating space constraints in key areas of the city. Elementary enrolment rose by 126 students, while secondary enrolment increased by more than 300 students.
The system now serves 15,149 elementary students and 8,838 secondary students. To support this population, the board hired 59 elementary teachers and 34 secondary teachers for the current academic year.
Board CEO John Ulicny noted that elementary growth persisted despite a smaller incoming kindergarten class. He explained that the board graduated a large Grade 8 class but was replacing them with a smaller JK class, yet total elementary numbers still climbed year over year.
Growth is concentrated in east Windsor and East Riverside. St. Joseph Catholic High School, the largest secondary school, saw its enrolment jump by over 100 students. St. John Vianney Elementary School in the same region continues to expand and remains the board's largest elementary school.
Administrators are developing plans to relieve pressure at fast-growing schools, including St. John Vianney and Assumption College Catholic High School in west Windsor. The board is currently waiting for the provincial minister to release capital funding priorities for the 2026-27 school year.
The board recently completed an eight-classroom addition at St. Joseph Catholic High School to accommodate rising demand in the area.
