Universal's Epic Universe tech struggles weigh on Orlando attendance

Universal’s Orlando parks are facing a financial challenge that traces back to the opening of Epic Universe. The company promised the 2025 launch would be the most technologically advanced theme park ever built. More than a year later, that technology has not translated into the expected surge in visitors.
By June 2026, Universal noted softness in year-over-year attendance in Orlando. Revenue and earnings for the theme park division declined. The primary driver was a failure to sustain the initial rush of fans who visited Epic Universe in 2025.
The core issue is reliability. High-tech attractions at Epic Universe are not operating with enough uptime to keep wait times low. When technology fails, guests experience longer lines and a diminished experience. This has reduced the likelihood that visitors will recommend the park to others.
Some attractions have succeeded in using technology to drive engagement. Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment ranked No. 2 globally in Theme Park Insider’s reader rankings last year. It trailed only Disney’s Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. However, other major investments have faced criticism. The new Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry ride has drawn frustration from fans due to frequent downtime and long queues.
The problem extends beyond Universal. Disney experienced similar reliability hurdles with Rise of the Resistance during its initial rollout. The issue is also appearing in smaller venues. Online message boards have seen a rise in complaints this Halloween season regarding AI-generated imagery, music, and merchandise at major Southern California parks.
Universal faces a design dilemma. The park currently lacks proven, low-tech attractions that can handle high capacity without complex mechanical failures. Industry observers suggest that traditional theater tricks and reliable ride systems often drive the experiences fans value most.
Universal intends to continue pushing new technology while addressing capacity. The company believes that short-term struggles with new tech can lead to better storytelling and immersion. The goal is to balance innovative spectacles with the proven operational reliability that keeps guests returning.
