Ciara Mageean has died at the age of 34. The Irish distance runner, known for her speed in the 1500 meters, passed away after a short illness. Her family announced the news on her social media accounts early Sunday morning.
Mageean first told the public about her condition in July 2025. At that time, she revealed that doctors had identified stage four bowel cancer. The announcement of her death states that she was surrounded by her loved ones when she died at 6:30 a.m.
Her athletic career included appearances at two Olympic Games. She competed for Ireland in the 1500 meters in Rio in 2016 and again in Tokyo in 2020. In 2024, she achieved a major milestone by winning the European 1500m gold medal in Rome.
She was also expected to run in Paris in 2024. However, an Achilles injury prevented her from competing. The injury forced her out of the event just one day before her scheduled heat. This ended a run that had seen her become one of the country’s most visible athletes.
Athletics Ireland issued a statement to honor her memory. The governing body described her as a much-loved figure whose courage and warmth touched many lives. They extended their condolences to her family and friends during this difficult period.
Fellow Olympian Phil Healy shared the announcement on his Instagram stories. He called her the most incredible person and a brave warrior. Other Irish sports figures, including Kelly Harrington and Katie McCabe, also posted tributes. They offered prayers and expressed their love for her husband and family.
The family’s statement closed with the Irish phrase Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam. This translates to May God keep her soul on the right side. Mageean’s death marks the end of a career that included international podium finishes and a deep connection with the Irish public.
