Speaker Mike Johnson is urging voters on Election Day to remember that the midterms are not just about who controls Congress, but about which vision of America will guide the nation for the next two years. In a USA Today op-ed published on October 30, Johnson described the choice as a fateful question between rejecting the American system or continuing to build on the principles that made the country great. He emphasized that the current Democratic Party has shifted significantly to the left, a change he argued will lead to instability if Democrats retake the House.
Johnson warned that even a narrow Democratic majority in the House would be held hostage by the Democratic Socialists of America, or DSA. He cited the political strategist James Carville, who stated he would prefer Republicans keep the House over a small Democratic win because the party would be captive to the DSA. Johnson agreed with this assessment, suggesting that the DSA’s platform calls for eradicating borders and prisons, granting mass amnesty, and abolishing the Senate. He noted that the DSA aims to replace the presidency and Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary handpicked by a DSA-run Congress.
To illustrate the potential consequences of this shift, Johnson pointed to France as a dark harbinger of what could happen in the United States. He described the violent riots in France, including the smashing of buildings and cars and the looting of hundreds of shops, as the result of decades of misguided policy. Johnson attributed the French crisis to lax immigration, suffocating regulation, and government largesse that drove debt to 119 percent of GDP. He argued that the chaos in France is a preview of the turmoil Americans might face if Democrats control Congress.
During an interview on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle, Johnson painted a vivid picture of what a Democratic Congress would look like. He predicted that it would be chaos every day for two years in the next Congress. Johnson said Democrats would try to open the borders wide and repeal the Working Families Tax Cut. He described the incoming group as angry Democrats who would seek retribution against President Donald Trump and his administration. He stressed that every vote matters, citing the fact that in 2024, ten House races were decided by 6,000 votes or less.
Johnson contrasted this vision with the record of the Republican majority in the House. In his USA Today op-ed, he highlighted that Republicans delivered historic results despite having the slimmest House majority since the Great Depression. He noted that Democrats forced three government shutdowns, including the longest in U.S. history, yet Republicans still passed significant legislation. Johnson listed accomplishments such as the Working Families Tax Cuts, which provided an average $10,900 boost in take-home pay for a family of four. He also mentioned the creation of the first-ever nationwide school choice program and the launch of Trump Accounts for children born between 2025 and 2028.
According to a statement from Speaker Johnson’s office marking the third anniversary of his Speakership, House Republicans have delivered $4.6 trillion in lower taxes, described as the largest middle- and working-class tax cut in history. The statement also cited a $1.6 trillion reduction in wasteful government spending and a totally secured border. Johnson claimed that violent crime is at its lowest rate in 126 years and that prescription drug costs have seen the largest decline in 60 years. He emphasized that more than one million private-sector jobs have been added to the economy, and American manufacturing is reshoring to the U.S.
Johnson has been traveling nonstop to campaign for his party, visiting more than 40 districts across 22 states in the past month alone. He told Fox and Friends that he is in Cincinnati, Ohio, with candidates who will flip blue seats to red. He described the election as a contrast between common sense and absolute crazy. Johnson said that Democrats are being transparent about their platform, which includes abolishing borders and prisons and defunding the police. He noted that the current Democratic leadership is further left than the previous progressive group, which he referred to as the squad.
Despite the high stakes, the AP reports that 35 percent of U.S. adults approve of Trump’s job performance, while about 7 in 10 say the country is heading in the wrong direction. The AP-NORC poll indicates that most Americans blame the president for high prices. However, Johnson remains confident that the polls are underestimating Republican enthusiasm. He stated that the American people understand this is a contrast election and that they do not want to go back to the crazy of previous Democratic administrations. He believes the record of results will outweigh the rhetoric of the opposing party.
The election is also seen as a referendum on the president’s second term, with voters struggling with high prices and an unpopular war with Iran. More than 57 million people had already voted as of Monday, surpassing early vote totals from four years ago in many states. Republicans are fighting to hold the Senate while bracing for potential losses in the House. Johnson’s message is clear: voters must choose between building on what made America great or allowing the far left to dismantle its foundations. He urged citizens to look at the record rather than the promises of the party that has historically opposed the president.
As polls open across the country, the focus remains on the 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats up for election. Democrats need a net gain of three districts in the House for a majority, while Republicans can lose no more than two. The outcome will determine who controls Congress for the final two years of the Trump presidency. Johnson’s campaign has centered on the idea that a Democratic House would lead to investigations, impeachment proceedings, and a shift toward a more radical left agenda. He remains optimistic that the Republican record of delivering tax cuts and border security will resonate with voters on this critical day.
